Introduction of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives to assess the language competence of Vietnamese children
Narrative skills are an important component of children's language competence. The assessment of narrative skills is conducted by using many different methods and tools. Using the literature review method, this paper introduces the Vietnamese version of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN, Gagarina et al., 2019) and its use. This tool has been used in several studies related to the narrative skills of Vietnamese-speaking children. The paper confirms that MAIN is a useful tool for collecting language sampling of Vietnamesespeaking children, providing different valuable information in measuring the language competencies of children with typical development and children with language disorders, children who speak monolingual Vietnamese, bilingual, and multilingual. This tool can be validated in future research to be a standardized test for use in clinical practice with Vietnamese-speaking children in different settings.
